Re s.s. "THORPENESS" CHEUNG KWAI WAN (DECD)

With further reference to your letter of the 15th December last we have been endeavouring to obtain details of the deceased to enable the Assessors, Messrs. E.R. Lloyd & Co., to deal with the matter. We have found this rather difficult owing to the fact that the Captain of the s.s. "THORPENESS" at the time of the accident is now in commend of another ship at present trading in Spain. We have written to him to let us have details but it is debatable whether at this juncture he will be in a position to be of assistance, especially as all the ship's papers went down when she was lost.

We have suggested to the Underwriters the possibility of dealing with the claim without complete particulars being supplied and as a result they have written us the enclosed letter, which we submit for your kind consideration.

Please be so good as to advise us whether the suggested figure of settlement would be acceptable to the dependants of the deceased, and thus bring to an early conclusion a matter which might be prolonged indefinitely.

We remain, dear Sir,

Yours faithfully,

For and on behalf of

THE WESTCLIFF SHIPPING CO.LTD.
